Diarrhoea is a condition of gastrointestinal system where the frequent passage of stools with loose, watery consistency with abdominal bloating, and cramps. There are many causes for Diarrhoea such as Viral (rotavirus, norovirus, and adenovirus), bacterial (Campylobacter, shigella, salmonellae, E coli, Yersinia), & other intestinal disorders (irritable bowel syndrome diverticulitis, colitis, celiac diseases etc.) due to water, food, and improper toilet habits. Even certain reactions with medications may cause Diarrhoea such as using blood pressure medications, cancer drugs, antibiotics etc. Other causes for Diarrhoea are intolerance to foods such as lactose or artificial sweeteners may cause Diarrhoea.
Diarrhoea can be chronic or acute. Diarrhoeal disease forms one of the two major killer diseases in children under five years of age in the developing world. In India, presently the diarrhoeal morbidity stands at 1.07 million cases and mortality stands at 2040 in these children. There are international and national efforts to overcome this problem especially in our country where diarrhoea forms a major part of the infectious diseases. The forms of Diarrhoea are Acute watery diarrhea (Significant fluid loss and rapid dehydration); Dysentery (Visible blood in stools, associated with intestinal damage and nutrient loss); & Persistent diarrhea (Diarrhea lasting 14 days or more).
